BAROSSA VALLEY
South Australia has some of the most ancient continuously producing vineyards anywhere in the world. It’s not surprising that these regions are considered some of the best in Australia. The Barossa valley is known for its big, bold, and exceptionally smooth shiraz.
MCLAREN VALE
The birthplace of South Australian wine is Scenic McLaren Vale. You can drive just 45 minutes south of Adelaide to enjoy the innovative wines at some of its world-renowned wineries, such as d’Arenberg. The d’Arenberg Cube is a five-storey structure that was inspired by a Rubik’s Cube. It’s one of Australia’s most unusual cellar doors.
YARRA VALLEY
The Yarra Valley, located east of Melbourne is the oldest region in the state. It was home to the first grapes that were planted in 1838. The Yarra Valley is known for its innovative winemakers who create boundary-pushing wines while keeping the tradition of the area. MORNINGTON PENINSULA
The Mornington Peninsula is home to rolling hills and beautiful pastures, which match the beauty of the wines produced there. Just over an hour from Melbourne, you will find yourself at the doorstep to must-visit wineries as well as restaurants such as Pt. Leo Estate is home to single-vineyard, handcrafted wine. The region’s specialty wines of pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot gris will not be missed.
HUNTER VALLEY
The Hunter Valley, Australia’s oldest wine region, is known for its distinctive expression of semillon. The Hunter, located just three hours from Sydney, is home to many of Australia’s most renowned winemaking families like Tyrrell’s Wines. You can see the inside of one of the oldest estates in the area, as well as private tastings which allow you to taste each sip.
ADELAIDE HILLS
Adelaide Hills is located less than an hour away from the city. It has a cool climate at an elevated altitude which makes it stand out from other wines in the state. Complex, medium-weight wines such as pinot noir can be found here. TAMAR VALLEY
Tasmania’s climate is ideal for sparkling wines such as pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot noir. A number of wineries can be found in the Tamar Valley, which is located less than an hour away from Launceston. Pipers Brook Winery is a great place to spend the day sipping their innovative wines while taking in the breathtaking ocean views.
KING VALLEY
Three hours north of Melbourne, you’ll find yourself surrounded with some of Australia’s most varied vineyards. King Valley is well-known for its Italian heritage. It grows wine varieties to match that, including the best prosecco in Australia. Brown Brothers, a well-known Australian winemaker, produces a variety of wines, from the traditional shiraz to the light and fruity moscato.
CANBERRA DISTRICT
New varieties are emerging from the Canberra wine district. Mount Majura, located just outside Canberra, is well-known for its shiraz and winemaking skills. But it also experiments boldly to create something new. Clonakilla’s vines were planted for the first time in 1971. They have grown to produce a unique blend of viognier and shiraz.
